CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – A second quarter 20-5 run by the Virginia Cavaliers proved too much to overcome as Hampton pushed back to within three points but fell 66-62 on Tuesday night in John Paul Jones Arena.
Hampton (1-2) looking to knock off its second Atlantic Coast Conference opponent this year, jumped out to a 9-7 lead on three 3-pointers. Virginia used a 6-0 flurry to take a 13-9 lead and used a three-pointer from Aliyah Huland El to take a 16-13 lead with 27 seconds left in the first quarter.
A bucket from Allina Starr 24 seconds into the second quarter tied the game at 16. Hampton then saw the Cavaliers rip off the 20-5 run to take a 36-21 lead with 1:48 left in the half on a 3-pointer from J'Kyra Brown. A
Mikayla Sayle layup and three points from DeJane James closed the half for Hampton down 36-26.
Monnazjea Finney-Smith hit consecutive 3-pointers to start the third quarter as Hampton quickly got back into the contest. An
Ashley Bates layup with 27 seconds left in the third brought Hampton to 50-48, but a driving jumper from Jocelyn Willoughby gave UVA a 52-48 advantage heading into the fourth.
Virginia pushed the lead to 11 midway in the fourth on a Dominique Toussaint layup with 7:05 left for a 59-48 lead. Hampton did have one last push as 3-pointers from Finney-Smith and K'Lynn Willis got them to within four points as Willis' triple closed the scoring at 66-62.
Finney-Smith scored 17 points and James added 13 to lead Hampton who was 21-of-61 from the floor (34.4%), 11-of-28 from 3-point range (39.3%) and outrebounded Virginia 40-32 including a 20-8 advantage on the offensive boards.
Hampton now travels to Stockton, California to participate in the Tiger Turkey Tipoff hosted by the University of the Pacific. The Lady Pirates tangle with Brown on Friday at 4 pm.
