ELON, N.C. – A one-out single from Carey Million scored Hannah Olsen with the eventual winning run as the host Elon Phoenix scored three times in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Hampton 6-5 in the season opener for both teams on Friday.
Brianna Anderson got the scoring, and the season, off for Hampton with a solo home run in the top of the first for a 1-0 lead. The Lady Pirates held that advantage till the bottom of the third when the Phoenix used an Emily Phoenix solo home run and a two-run triple from Kristin Hoover to take a 3-1 lead.
Hampton trimmed the deficit in the top of the sixth as
Daniella Milloy doubled and took third on a throw attempt to get Anderson at the plate failed for a 3-2 deficit.
In the seventh, Hampton put up a three-spot to take a 5-3 lead all with two outs.
Jada Fields tied the game with a solo home run to center at 3-all.
Kial Watts then singled and went to third as
Quierra Bradford beat out an infield hit. Anderson followed with a double to left center to plate both runs for a 5-3 advantage.
Elon answered with its own three-spot in the bottom of the seventh with one out as Emily Roper tied the game with a two-run single before Million's game-winning hit.
Anderson was 3-for-4 with three RBIs to lead Hampton at the plate. Watts joined her in the multi-hit club going 2-for-3 as Hampton had nine hits on the game.
Allie Hotetz came in relief of starter
Allyson Babinsack and took the loss going 2.1 innings and allowing four hits and three runs.
These teams will close the weekend series on Saturday with a doubleheader starting at noon.
