SOFTBALL LOSES DOUBLEHEADER AT ELON

ELON, N.C. – The Hampton University softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader at Elon on Saturday, losing the first game 2-0 before falling 5-3 in the second game at the Hunt Softball Park.

The Lady Pirates are now 0-3 on the season.

The first game of the doubleheader was a pitchers' duel, with Allyson Babinsack and Kenna Quinn matching each other through the first five scoreless innings. Elon broke through in the bottom of the sixth, when Emily Roper led off the frame with a double – before Morgan Reich pinch-ran for her.

Carey Million then reached on a bunt single, before they both scored on a double by Ashtyn Foddrell.

Babinsack held Elon (3-0) to just six hits despite taking the loss, while Quinn held the Lady Pirates (0-3) to three hits.

Quierra Bradford, Sarah Kollas and Morgan Crawford each had a hit in the first game.

The Lady Pirates struck first in the second game, pushing across a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to take a 2-0 lead. After Bradford led off the inning with a double, Ashley Grassini singled up the middle to put runners on the corners. Grassini then stole second and Bradford scored on the play to give Hampton its first run.

Grassini took third on the play, then scored on a Cassidy Blackwell single for the second run.

Elon scored three runs in the bottom of the third, taking a 3-2 lead after an RBI single from Callie Horn.

The Lady Pirates tied the game at 3-3 in the top of the fifth; the frame opened with a Brianna Anderson double and Danielle Budden fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. Budden would get caught trying to steal second, but Anderson scored on the play to tie the game.

A Kristin Hoover RBI double and Alaina Hall sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth gave the Phoenix a 5-3 lead.

Bradford and Blackwell each had three hits in the second game, with Blackwell recording the RBI.

The Lady Pirates will be in Boiling Springs, N.C. this coming weekend to compete in the Runnin' Bulldog Tournament. For more information on Hampton University softball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5757, or visit the official Pirates website at www.hamptonpirates.com.
