WASHINGTON, D.C. –
The Hampton University softball team opened conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader sweep over rival Howard, winning the first game 5-1 before taking the second game 7-2.

The Lady Pirates improved to 7-13 overall and 2-0 in MEAC play this season.

Hampton struck first in the top of the first inning of the first game; after Taylor Warrick led off the game with a single, she went on to steal second base. Then she stole third before scoring on an errant throw to give the Lady Pirates a 1-0 lead.

After Howard tied the game at 1-1 in the bottom of the first, Allyson Babinsack gave Hampton the lead back in the top of the fourth, singling home Quierra Bradford to give the Lady Pirates a 2-1 lead. A Warrick RBI triple and a Bradford RBI single in the fifth grew the lead to 4-1.

Hampton added another run in the seventh, when Warrick led the inning with a triple and then scored on a sac fly from Alana Vandenburg.

Warrick and Bradford each went 3-for-4 at the plate in the first game.

Babinsack struck out five and scattered four hits over seven innings to pick up her fourth win of the season.

Howard held a 1-0 lead after an inning in the second game, before the Lady Pirates answered with a run in the top of the second. An RBI single from Morgan Crawford tied the game at 1-1, before Howard took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the frame on an Imani Ballard home run.

Hampton pushed across two runs in the top of the fourth, taking a 3-2 lead after Jada Fields scored on an error and Brianna scored on an RBI groundout.

Anderson also scored in the sixth on a double steal to give the Lady Pirates a 4-2 lead.

It was the first of four runs in the inning for Hampton, which then got a two-run home run from Babinsack, her first of the season, and an RBI groundout from Warrick.

Anderson went 3-for-4 at the plate in the second game, while Crawford and Babinsack each drove in two runs.
