SOFTBALL SWEEPS DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST COPPIN STATE

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team swept a doubleheader against Coppin State on Friday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, winning the first game 5-4 before taking the second game 9-1 in six innings.
 
The Lady Pirates improved to 15-20 overall and 10-1 in MEAC play.
 
Hampton struck first in the first game, pushing across three runs in the bottom of the first inning. It began when Alana Vandenburg was hit by a pitch and Quierra Bradford followed with a walk. Allyson Babinsack then doubled them both home, before scoring herself when Jada Fields reached on an error.
 
Coppin State got on the board in the top of the fourth on an RBI single from Cloe' Ochoa, before the Lady Pirates took a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the frame after a sac fly from MacKenzie Wise.
 
Coppin State (6-37, 4-8 MEAC) took advantage of two errors in the fifth, cutting the lead to 4-3 on a two-run single from Cayla Brown.
 
But the Lady Pirates got a run back in the bottom of the fifth, taking a 5-3 lead when Cassidy Blackwell had a pinch-hit single, stole second, then stole third and scored on a throwing error.
 
The Lady Eagles got another run in the top of the sixth, but couldn't complete the comeback.
 
Babinsack and Brianna Anderson each went 2-for-3 at the plate, and Babinsack had a team-high two RBIs. She also got her ninth win of the season, going six innings and scattering six hits.
 
Allie Hotetz pitched a perfect seventh for her first save of the season.
 
Hotetz then picked up her sixth win of the season in the second game, going six innings and giving up just three hits.
 
The bats followed suit, as Hampton pushed across six runs in the bottom of the first inning. An RBI single from Blackwell kicked off the scoring, before Fields followed with a two-run home run – her fifth of the season.
 
Hotetz then singled home a pair of runs, before Taylor Warrick had an RBI single of her own.
 
Bradford hit a solo shot in the bottom of the seventh – her second of the season – to put Hampton up 7-0.
 
Coppin State scored its lone run of the game in the top of the third on a sac fly.
 
The Lady Pirates clinched the run-rule victory with a pair of runs in the bottom of the sixth; Anderson brought home the first run with an infield single that scored Sarah Kollas, before Morgan Crawford ended the game on a sac fly.
 
Anderson had three of Hampton's 12 hits in the second game, while Hotetz drove in a team-high two runs.
