SOFTBALL SWEEPS COPPIN STATE WITH 8-2 WIN

HAMPTON, Va. – Taylor Warrick was 3-for-4 with three RBIs, while Cassidy Blackwell and Danielle Budden had two hits apiece as Hampton defeated Coppin State 8-2 to sweep a three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) series on Saturday.

The Lady Pirates started the scoring in the first inning as Warrick led off with a single and stole second before advancing to third on a flyball from Brianna Anderson.  Winning pitcher Allyson Babinsack drove her in with a sacrifice fly for an early 1-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Hampton put up three runs as Ashley Grassini smashed a home run to left-center to lead off the inning.  Jada Fields followed with a triple to right-center and scored two batters later on a RBI single from Budden.  After stealing second, Budden scored on a single by Warrick for a 4-0 Hampton advantage.

Hampton (16-20, 11-1) pushed the lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth as Blackwell started with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt from MacKenzie Wise.  Budden reached on an error to move Blackwell to third before stealing second.  After a fly out, Anderson doubled to left-center to plate Blackwell and Budden for the 6-0 lead.

After giving up two runs in the top of the fifth, Hampton answered with two in the bottom of the sixth.  Blackwell reached on a single and went to second as Wise reached by an error.  A bunt single from Budden loaded the bases before Warrick singled to left to score Blackwell and Wise for the 8-2 lead.
Babinsack threw the first five innings allowing six hits, two runs, one earned run and striking out two.  Allie Hotetz pitched the final two innings to lock up the win.

Hampton returns to action this weekend hosting Norfolk State University in a three-game MEAC Northern Division series.  The teams will play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 29 starting at 1 pm and then a single game on Sunday, April 30 at noon.
