HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team dropped its series finale against Delaware State on Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, as the Lady Hornets came away with a 6-5 win in 11 innings.
The Lady Pirates fell to 10-16 overall and 5-1 in MEAC play.
Hampton struck first in the bottom of the first inning; after
Taylor Warrick singled and
Ashley Grassini reached on an error, they both scored on a single up the middle from
Quierra Bradford that gave the Lady Pirates a 2-0 lead.
That lead grew to 3-0 in the second, when Warrick doubled and eventually came home on a double from
Brianna Anderson.
Delaware State (11-20, 8-3 MEAC) tied the game at 3-3 after a three-run home run from Desiree Moreno in the fourth.
Both teams were then held scoreless through the next three innings, which forced extra frames – and neither team scored in the eighth or ninth inning. But a pair of doubles in the top of the 10th gave the Lady Hornets a 5-3 lead.
Jada Fields doubled home
MacKenzie Wise in the bottom of the 10th, cutting the lead to 5-4, before
Cassidy Blackwell doubled Fields home to tie the game.
But Delaware State pushed across another run in the 11th to take the win.
Warrick and Blackwell each had two hits for the Lady Pirates, while Bradford had two RBIs.
Allyson Babinsack struck out six in going the full 11 innings.
The Lady Pirates will be in Fairfax, Va. on Wednesday for a doubleheader against George Mason. For more information on Hampton University softball, please call the Office of Sports Information at (757) 727-5757, or visit the official Pirates website at
