HAMPTON, Va. – Celebrating Senior Day on Sunday, the Hampton Lady Pirates softball team used a walk-off single from
Taylor Warrick in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Norfolk State 3-2 and sweep a three-game Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division weekend series.
Hampton scored single runs in the fourth and fifth as in the fourth,
Jada Fields started with a double and went to third on a bunt by
Quierra Bradford.
Morgan Crawford then dropped a squeeze bunt to score Fields. In the fifth,
Taylor Clark singled and went to second on a
Danielle Budden single. Both moved up a base on a wild pitch and Clark scored on a sacrifice fly from
Taylor Warrick to lead 2-0.
Norfolk State scored two runs in the top of the seventh as Megan Prezlawski singled and went to third on a double by Kylee Lopez. Both runners scored on a single through the right side by Shelby Deschamps to tie the game at 2-all.
In the bottom of the ninth, with two outs senior
Danielle Budden doubled to left center and Warrick followed on the next pitch with a single to left that plated Budden for the winning run. Budden and fellow senior
Taylor Clark ended their home careers going 3-for-3 and 2-for-3 respectively. Warrick was 2-for-4 with two RBI and Fields was 2-for-4 with a run scored for Hampton.
Allie Hotetz earned the win with two innings of relief allowing one hit and striking out two. She came in with two on and no outs in the eighth inning and struck out two of the three outs allowing Hampton to escape that jam.
Hampton (19-20, 14-1) now travels to Morgan State for a make-up conference three-game series starting on Friday at 1 pm. With one win in those three games, Hampton will clinch the MEAC Northern Division crown.
