SOFTBALL COMPLETES SERIES SWEEP OVER MORGAN STATE

BALTIMORE – The Hampton University softball team wrapped up the regular season on Sunday with a doubleheader sweep over Morgan State, taking the first game 2-0 before winning the second game 9-0 in six innings.

The Lady Pirates (22-20, 17-1 MEAC) enter this coming week's MEAC Championship on a nine-game winning streak and will be the Northern Division's top seed.

Hampton scored both runs of the first game in the top of the first inning; after Brianna Anderson walked and stole second, Kial Watts singled her home to give the Lady Pirates a 1-0 lead. Watts, who had advanced to second on that play, scored on a Jada Fields single.

Allie Hotetz went the distance to pick up her ninth win of the season, striking out a season-high six and holding Morgan State (23-21, 12-6 MEAC) to just four hits.

Watts went 3-for-4 at the plate in the first game, while Fields was 2-for-3 with a walk.

Watts got the Lady Pirates on the board in the top of the first inning of the second game as well, bringing in Anderson with a single that put Hampton up 1-0. She followed that up with another RBI single in the third, kicking off a frame in which the Lady Pirates scored three runs.

Hotetz reached on an error with the bases loaded later in the inning, bringing home Anderson, before a sacrifice fly from Morgan Crawford pushed Lorena Alvarez across and gave Hampton a 4-0 lead.

Watts and Fields both singled to lead off the fifth, before Cassidy Blackwell singled home Watts to give the Lady Pirates a 5-0 lead.

Danielle Budden got the sixth inning started with a single and a stolen base, before she advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Watts single. That gave the Lady Pirates a 6-0 lead, and it was the first run in a four-run inning that ended the game via run rule.

Hotetz singled with the bases loaded later in the inning, scoring Watts and putting Hampton up 7-0, before Quierra Bradford ended the game with a two-run single up the middle.

Watts was 4-for-4 with three RBIs in the second game. Hotetz and Bradford each had two RBIs.

Hotetz picked up her second win of the day, and 10th of the season, striking out five in six innings and only giving up three hits.

Hampton will open the conference tournament in Ormond Beach, Fla. on Thursday at 10 a.m. against North Carolina Central.
