Ashley Bates scored 17 points and had a season-high six steals but Hampton fell to Elon 77-62 to snap a three-game winning streak on Sunday.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Elon started the game with a 10-0 run in the first quarter to take its largest lead of the quarter on an Anna Popovic layup at the 7:27 mark.
- Hampton would tie the game at 12-12 on a Mina Porte free throw at the 3:52 mark. Each team would trade buckets, as Hampton led by one at the end of the first quarter 20-19.
- In the second, Bates would knock down a three pointer at the 6:40 mark making it 31-21 giving Hampton their largest lead all night. Lady Pirates would go into half up by three 38-35.
- Kaylah Lupoe would hit a lay up to close out the third, making it a four point Phoenix lead 55-51 at the end of three quarters.
- Elon opened the fourth scoring the first seven points to take a 62-51 lead on a jumper by Ariel Colon with 7:19 left. A pair of Laren VanArsdale free throws 11 seconds later cut it to nine. She converted a three-point play at the 6:53 mark for a 64-56 deficit, but that was as close as Hampton got.
BEHIND THE NUMBERS
- Bates finished with 17 points and six steals and VanArsdale chipped in with 13 points for the Lady Pirates.
- Lupoe added 15 points, six rebounds and five blocks shooting 5-6 from the field and 5-5 from the free throw line.
- Colon, Lexi Mercer, and Emily Maupin finished with double figures to lead the way for the Phoenix.
