HAMPTON SPLITS TWINBILL WITH UMES

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team split a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference double header with the University of Maryland Eastern Shore losing 2-1 in the opener but rallying for a 10-2 win in the nightcap on Saturday.

In game one, DaSha Hill would lead off the bottom of the first and reached second base on a fielding error by the centerfielder. Hill stole third and would score the team only run of the game.

At the top of the fourth, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore would have two hits and a walk to have bases loaded. After a wild pitch, one run would score followed by a throwing error that brought in the go ahead run.  University of Maryland Eastern Shore rode the pitching of Naysha Goodman to hold off the Lady Pirates 2-1.

Game two Hill started off with a single up the middle. Hill would steal second and score on a single from Alana VanDenburg. Cassidy Blackwell would smash a triple to right center to drive in Hampton's second run. Kial Watts followed by ripping a line drive back up the middle to drive in the Lady Pirates third run. Taylor Warrick tripled to right field scoring Watts and Morgan Crawford followed with a bunt to score Warrick for a 5-0 lead.

Hampton would score one run in the bottom of the second but would pour it on in the bottom of the fourth as they added three more runs to pull away from the Hawks. Morgan Crawford would single to left field and the Lady Pirates would end the game on the run rule in the bottom of the fifth, as Daniella Milloy laid down a bunt to force a throwing error which allowed pinch-runner Brianna Anderson to score the game clinching run.

Hill went 3-for-3 and scored three times. Blackwell went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two driven in, while Warrick went 3-for-3 with one run scored and had three RBI'S to lead Hampton in game two.

These teams finish off their three-game MEAC series on Sunday at noon as Hampton celebrates Senior Day.  Ceremonies to honor the five seniors will begin approximately 11:30 am.
