HAMPTON, Va. ā A smothering 16-0 run early in the game and a defensive attack that held the nation's leading scorer to a season low 14 points helped push Hampton to a 64-58 win over Campbell Saturday night.
After giving up the first five points of the game, the Pirates scored the next 16 to lead 16-5 at the 10:44 mark on a pair of
Jermaine Marrow free throws.Ā The lead grew to 24-10 on a four-point play by Marrow with 7:20 remaining in the half.
Campbell cut the lead to six on a free throw by Ja'Cor Nelson at the two minute mark to trail 27-21, but a
Lysander Bracey free throw and a pair by
Trevond Barnes helped Hampton get the lead back to nine at 30-21 going into halftime.
Chris Clemmons who entered the game leading the country in scoring at over 29 points per game got untracked early with a layup and a 3-pointer on consecutive possessions as he finished with a season low 14 points.
Hampton had the lead throughout the second half but could never get a comfortable margin against the Camels.Ā The lead was trimmed to two in the final 20 seconds, but free throws by
Kalin Fisher, two from Marrow and one from Barnes gave Hampton the final 64-58 margin.
