HAMPTON, Va. – Lotta Vehka-Aho drained a 15-foot jumper from the right wing at the buzzer as Florida Atlantic rallied in the fourth quarter to defeat Hampton 64-63 in the home opener on Thursday night.
In a contest that saw 13 lead changes, with five of those in the final ten minutes, sophomore
Laren VanArsdale banked in a three-point shot from the top of the key with 1.9 seconds left to put Hampton up 63-62.
On the ensuing inbounds pass, Juliette Gauthier caught the pass and found Vehka-Aho on the right wing and she nailed the jump shot at the horn to give the Owls the win.
Ashley Bates was the leading scorer for Hampton with 23 points, eight rebounds and six steals, while
MaKayla Timmons added 14 points and five steals. Â
Crystal Primm topped Florida Atlantic with 14 points and six rebounds, while Vehka-Aho had 11 points, three assists and three steals and Gauthier added 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists.
Hampton now goes to Furman University on Monday night for a 7pm start in Greenville, S.C.
