SPARTANBURG, S.C. --Â Hampton Lady Pirates picked up a Big South Conference win on the road as they defeated USC-Upstate in four winning 27-25, 26-24, 19-25, 31-29 in G.B. Hodge Center on Friday night.
The win over USC Upstate was the first for Hampton in six matches in school history.Â
Sydney Sumner had 14 kills and 18 digs,Â
Clara Smith added 12 kills, whileÂ
Sasha Saric chipped in 17 kills andÂ
Jessica Pugh added 21 digs for Hampton.
Lena Reed-Petracek finished with 24 assists and
Brooke Irvin ended with 23 for the Lady Pirates (8-16, 3-10).
In the second set Hampton led 23-19 following an attack error on Mikenzie Young-Mullins. The Spartans would score the next five points to take the lead 24-23. A kill by
Genevieve Reynolds would tie the score 24-24. Hampton scored two of the last three points and seal the set on a kill by Gabby Callaway.
The fourth set saw the Lady Pirates all tied at 23-23 after a kill by
Alyah Barkley. Hampton would score two of the next three points to take the lead 25-24, following a kill by Barkley. Each team would trade points tying 28-28 on a kill by Sumner. The Lady Pirates would take the match on a kill by Smith to win the set 31-29.
Hampton will be on the road again as the travel to Asheville, North Carolina to take UNC Ashville on Nov.16 at 2 pm.
