NORFOLK, Va. -- Ashley Bates had 20 points, while Dlayla Chakolis hauled in a season-high 12 rebounds as Hampton withstood a fourth quarter rally from Mount St. Mary's to take a 68-60 win in day one of the Anne Donovan Classic.

The Lady Pirates jumped out to a 7-2 lead on a Bates jumper with 6:44 remaining in the first.  A 3-pointer from Jatarrikah Settle brought the Mountaineers to 7-5 17 seconds later, but Hampton responded with 11 straight points as a Nylah Young layup with 49 seconds left put Hampton up 18-5.

Hampton opened the second on an 11-3 run to take a 29-10 lead on a triple by Bates with 6:55 remaining in the half.  The Lady Pirates were blistering the nets hitting 60% from the field in the second quarter (6-of-10) and 66.7% from 3-point range hitting 4-of-6.

In the third, the lead grew to 22 points on a MaKayla Timmons triple with 3:55 left to lead 46-24.  Laren VanArsdale hit a jumper with 44 seconds left to give Hampton a 20-point advantage at 50-30 heading into the fourth quarter.

Hampton kept a 20-point lead with seven minutes left on a free throw by VanArsdale to lead 60-31.  Mount St. Mary's got on a run and cut the lead to 65-57 with 36 seconds left on a layup by Aryna Taylor.  Chakolis hit one free throw with nine seconds left for the final Hampton point.

VanArsdale had 10 points and six assists, while Timmons added nine points, six rebounds, four steals and three assists.  Alyssa Sweeney went 3-for-5 from 3-point range to score nine points off the bench.

The Lady Pirates now face tournament host Old Dominion on Friday at 5 pm in the second day of the Anne Donovan Classic.
