HAMPTON, Va. – Sophomore
Ben Stanley scored a career high 40 points to lead three in double figures for Hampton as they dropped a heartbreaking 94-91 overtime decision to Howard on Thursday night.
Stanley was 15-of-19 from the floor, including a three-pointer with 27 seconds left in regulation that put Hampton up 82-79. Charles Williams drained a three-pointer from the right wing with 17 seconds left to tie the game at 82.
In the overtime, a three-point play by Stanley tied the game for the last time at 85 with 3:31 left. The Bison pushed the lead to five with 38 seconds left on a Nate Garvey floater to lead 91-86. A three-pointer by
Chris Shelton gave Hampton one last shot down 93-91 with 13 seconds left, but Ian Lee hit one of two from the line with 10 seconds left to seal the win.
Davion Warren had a double-double with 17 points and season-highs of 10 rebounds and six assists.Â
Dondre Griffin went for 16 points, nine assists and seven rebounds for the Pirates.
Stanley's 15 field goals was the most in a game in the Division I era for Hampton, while his 40 point outing was the third time a Pirate went for at least 40 points in a game in the Division I era.Â
Jermaine Marrow had 40 last year against High Point, while JaFonde Williams went for 43 against Maine in 1996.
Williams paced five in double figures for Howard with 23 points.
Hampton closes out a three-game week hosting cross-water rival Norfolk State on Saturday night at 6 pm.
