HAMPTON, Va. – Behind a balanced scoring effort as seven players scored between eight and 22 points, Hampton celebrated Senior Night defeating Winthrop 90-75 on Thursday.
Junior
Jermaine Marrow paced four in double figures with 22 points, while junior
Greg Heckstall added a double-double with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Seniors
Kalin Fisher (12) and
Trevond Barnes (10) also joined the double figures group.
Winthrop took a 17-11 lead with 13:32 left in the half on a 3-pointer by Bjorn Broman. Hampton responded with a 26-4 run in the first half to get a 16-point advantage on a 3-pointer by
Akim Mitchell with 5:34 remaining and a 37-21 lead.
In the second half, the Eagles cut into the margin and trailed 58-52 on a 3-pointer by Nych Smith with 12:15 left. The Pirates scored nine of the next 12 points as a putback by
Ben Stanley pushed the lead back to a dozen at 67-55 with 9:39 left.
The Pirates used clutch free throw shooting and ball handling down the stretch as they didn't commit a turnovers in the last nine minutes, while going 10-for-11 from the line in the final two minutes to keep the Eagles perched for their third straight victory.
On the night, Hampton was 30-of-65 from the floor (46.2%), 10-of-27 from 3-point land (37%) and 20-of-23 from the foul line (87%). The Eagles outrebounded Hampton 39-38, but Hampton forced 12 turnovers while only committing five themselves.
Hampton closes the regular season on Saturday at USC Upstate at 4 pm.
