LADY PIRATES SPLIT WITH NORFOLK STATE

Walkoff win in Game 1 Gives Hampton 20 wins

HAMPTON, Va. – Behind a walk-off single from Samyah Richardson in the bottom of the 11th in game one, the Hampton softball team split a doubleheader with Norfolk State winning the opener 4-3 and losing 2-1 in the nightcap on Wednesday.

Game one saw Hampton push a run across in the bottom of the first as DaSha Hill singled and went to second on an error before scoring on a single by Brianna Anderson.

Norfolk State scored a pair in the third and one in the sixth on a sacrifice fly by Shelby DeSchamps to take a 3-1 lead.  The Lady Pirates responded with a run in the sixth as Janae Lyles singled and was replaced by pinch-runner Joya Greer who was sacrificed to second by Richardson.  Sarah Kollas followed with a single to plate Greer trimming the deficit to 3-2.

In the bottom of the seventh, with one out Anderson walked and went to second on a Kial Watts single.  Lyles followed with a single to center to plate Anderson to tie the game.

The teams traded chances until the 11th when with one out Watts singled and went to second on a sacrifice bunt by Lyles.  Richardson followed with a sharp single down the left field line to score Watts with the winning run.  Allie Hotetz took the win throwing the last seven innings in relief allowing six hits and one run.  Watts, Lyles and Morgan Crawford each had two hits in the game.

Game two saw Norfolk State scratch a run in the second on a RBI single by Deschamps and one in the fifth on a solo home run by Tuli Iosefa to lead 2-0.  Hampton answered with a run in the bottom of the seventh as Anderson started with a triple and scored on a Lyles double.  The Lady Pirates had runners at second and third with one out but couldn't get the tying run across.

Hotetz provided another strong pitching effort in a tough-luck loss allowing eight hits in a complete game.  Lyles was 2-for-3 to account for half of Hampton's hits in game two.

The Lady Pirates will host Winthrop this weekend in a three-game series starting with a doubleheader on Saturday at noon.
