MURFREESBORO, N.C. –
Lonnie Jones had four goals, while
Pierce Johnson added three and two assists as Hampton held off a late rally from homestanding Chowan to take an 18-16 win on Wednesday.
After a slow first period that saw Hampton take a 3-2 lead, scoring started up for both teams as the Pirates scored the first three goals in five minutes behind tallies from
Nathan Brungot, Melvin Scott, III and
Baron Edmondson. The last tally by Edmondson came off a feed from
Darren Almodiel to put Hampton up 6-2 at the 10:05 mark.
Chowan scored three of the next four goals, to trim the deficit to 7-5 with 3:51 left in the half. Jones got his first tally in that stretch and joined Johnson with goals to push Hampton to a 9-5 advantage with 1:41 left in the half.
The Pirates started the second half scoring three of the first four goals behind markers by Johnson and Jones with two to take the Hampton lead to 12-7 with just under 10 minutes in the third. Chowan rallied scoring four of the next six to get the deficit to 14-11 with 2:09 left.Â
Josh Square caught a feed by Napier with 71 seconds left in the third to put Hampton up 15-11.
In the fourth, the Pirates scored three goals in a two minute and 10 second span behind shots by
Jonathan Napier,
Josh Square and
Malcolm Flynn. Square and Flynn scored 10 seconds apart as Hampton held an 18-12 lead with 8:43 left. Chowan scored the last four goals with a marker by Austin Lee with 61 seconds left bringing the hosts to 18-16.
Joining Jones and Johnson in the goals category on Wednesday were Brungot and Square with two each, Derian Williams-Sturdivant, Napier,
Jordan Brown,
Kendall Sapp, Melvin Scott, III,
Malcolm Flynn and Edmondson with one each. Williams-Sturdivant had three assists, Johnson added two while
Darren Almodiel, Brown, Elliott Johnson, III and Napier had one helper each.
Kevin Mondy earned his fifth win in the cage this year with 10 saves in 45 minutes, while
Paxtin Powell had one in the final 15 minutes.
Hampton returns to action on Saturday in Sparks, Md. Against Bethany College at the U.S. Lacrosse Complex.
