SOFTBALL HOLDS OFF CSU RALLY FOR 3-2 WIN

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team held off a seventh-inning rally from Charleston Southern to earn a 3-2 win on a sunny Sunday afternoon at home.

Hampton bats came alive in the fourth as Kial Watts started the inning with a single up the middle. Watts was replaced by pinch runner Casey Walker who went to second on a walk to Janae Lyles. Two outs later, Kennedy Hickey was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to score the first run.  Taylor Warrick followed with a double to score Morgan Crawford and Sarah Kollas to give Hampton a 3-0 lead.

Charleston Southern made its rally in the top of the seventh with one out and the bases loaded as a Brooklynn Brewington bunt single pushed the first run across.  With two outs and the bases still loaded, Caitlyn Emberson singled in a run but Brianna Anderson threw out Annie Bakenhuss at the plate to end the threat and the game.

Allie Hotetz earned the win throwing 6.1 innings and allowing seven hits and two runs for her ninth win of the year.  Allyson Babinsack threw the last two outs to earn her first save of the year.

Hampton returns to action on Tuesday for a 1pm for a doubleheader against Norfolk State at home.
