CHARLESTON, S.C. – A 12-0 run over a nearly four-minute stretch of the third and early fourth quarters helped propel Hampton to a 64-59 Big South Conference win over Charleston Southern on Saturday.
Neither team held more than a four-point advantage for the majority of the first half before a layup from
Dlayla Chakolis put Hampton up 34-29 with 66 seconds left in the half. A 3-pointer from Tierra Steede trimmed the lead to 34-32 as the teams went to halftime.
In the third quarter, Hampton (10-7, 6-2) held a four-point lead at 40-36 following a pair of
Ashley Bates free throws with 4:51 remaining. Charleston Southern (3-13, 1-6) scored the next six points to lead 42-40 on a Carmella Walker jumper with 2:42 left in the quarter.
Hampton responded with a 12-0 run that stretched to the 8:52 mark of the fourth as
MaKayla Timmons went 1-of-2 from the line to put the Lady Pirates up 52-42.
The Buccaneers trimmed the lead to one on a couple of occasions, the last being on an Ahlea Myers layup with 40 seconds left to trail 60-59. Hampton used a jumper by
Laren VanArsdale and a pair of
Nylah Young free throws for the win.
VanArsdale had 17 points and five rebounds, while Young had another double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Joining them in double figures was Timmons with 16 points and six assists. Just missing was Bates with eight and three steals, and Chakolis with seven points.
Hampton is now off until January 25 when they host High Point at 4 pm.
