HAMPTON, Va. --
Ashley Bates scored 16 points and hauled in eight rebounds to lead three in double figures on Thursday night as Hampton withstood a fourth quarter comeback from visiting Radford for a 51-48 Big South win.
The lead went back and forth through the first quarter as the Highlanders held a 9-7 lead at the end of one. Radford (4-9, 2-2) pushed the lead to 18-15 with 5:20 left in the half on a jumper by Kiana Johnson. Hampton (8-6, 3-1) closed the half on a 14-5 run to lead 29-23 as
Laren VanArsdale beat the halftime horn with a 3-pointer.
That run continued for Hampton as they opened the third quarter on a run to take a 39-28 lead with 4:20 left on a layup by
Nylah Young. A free throw by Amele Ngwafang with four seconds left pulled the Highlanders to 43-35 heading into the fourth quarter.
Radford continued that aggression scoring the first nine points of the quarter to take a 44-43 lead with 5:15 left on a Ngwafang layup. Bates quickly answered with a triple off a feed by
Dlayla Chakolis to retake the lead 46-44 just 24 seconds later.
The Highlanders scored the next four points on layups by Aiden Rainford and Johnson to lead 48-46 with exactly three minutes left. Hampton closed the game with a layup and a pair of free throws by Young along with a free throw by Bates for the 51-48 win.
Young recorded her third straight double-double with 14 points and a season-high 13 rebounds to pace Hampton on the boards. VanArsdale added 13 points and four assists for Hampton who has won four in a row after a conference opening loss.
The Lady Pirates return to the home floor on Saturday at 4 pm when they face Campbell.
