HAMPTON, Va. – A 16-0 run stretching into the early second quarter provided the boost as the Hampton Lady Pirates knocked off Presbyterian 67-53 in a key women's basketball matchup on Saturday.
The Blue Hose held an early 8-6 lead on a jumper by Trinity Johnson with 5:29 left in the opening quarter. Hampton (16-10, 12-5) responded to close the first on a 13-0 run as a
Laren VanArsdale free throw gave the Lady Pirates a 19-8 lead at the end of one.
That run continued the first 33 seconds of the second quarter as
MaKayla Timmons drained a 3-pointer to lead 22-8 at the 9:27 mark. Presbyterian cut the lead in half on a 11-3 run to trail 25-19 on a pair of Johnson free throws with 6:03 left. Hampton closed the quarter on a 13-2 run pushing the lead to 38-21 on a pair of
Alyssa Sweeney free throws with 21 seconds remaining in the half.
The Lady Pirates followed in the third quarter by holding Presbyterian scoreless for the final 6:11 pushing a 16-point lead to 54-30 as
Nylah Young hit a layup off a VanArsdale feed to lead 54-30 after three.
Presbyterian made a run in the fourth outscoring Hampton 16-1 over a five-minute span as a Bria Gibbs layup brought the Blue Hose to 57-48 with 2:12 left. They got no closer than nine the rest of the way as VanArsdale hit four free throws and
Ashley Bates added two in the final 38 seconds.
VanArsdale was the leading scorer with 18 points, while Young recorded another double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds. Bates scored 13 points with six rebounds, five assists and five steals, while Timmons had 12 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Hampton is now off until February 29 hosting Charleston Southern for Senior Day.
