SONJA MAKSIMOVIC NAMED HEAD VOLLEYBALL COACH

HAMPTON, Va. -- Hampton University Department of Athletics announced today that former Lady Pirate standout Sonja Maksimovic will be the new Head Volleyball Coach.

"It is a pleasure to bring on Sonja Maksimovic as our new Head Volleyball Coach," said Hampton University President Dr. William R. Harvey.  "With her deep background in the program, along with being an alum, I look forward to seeing how they progress in the Big South Conference."

Maksimovic is no stranger to the Hampton University volleyball program having been involved in all aspects.  She played from 2011-2014 and was a part of back-to-back Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Championship teams in 2013 and 2014.  After finishing her playing days as a two-time MEAC All-Academic honoree, she served as a graduate assistant in 2015 and 2016 before becoming the full-time assistant for the last three seasons.

In her senior season, Maksimovic was a Third Team All-MEAC selection averaging 2.38 kills and 2.68 points per set, ranking third on the team in both categories. She also had 36 total blocks on the team, joining a Lady Pirates defensive attack that averaged almost two blocks a set.

She recorded five double-doubles her senior campaign, including a season-best of 17 kills and 16 digs against Coppin State. Her career high in kills came as a sophomore in 2012, when she had 18 against Wofford.

During the 2014 MEAC Tournament, Maksimovic had 11 digs in the semifinals against Coppin State to go along with six kills. In the quarterfinals against North Carolina Central, she had seven kills, hitting .294.

Maksimovic was also a setter as a sophomore in 2012, notching a career-high 51 assists at Norfolk State.  The 2012 season also saw Maksimovic record a career-high 21 digs against Radford, while her career-best hitting percentage of .643 (10 kills and one error in 14 total attacks) occurred in her freshman season in 2011 against North Carolina Central.

She received her Bachelor's degree in economics from Hampton in August of 2015 and her Master's degree in Sport Administration in 2017.
