SPARTANBURG, S.C. – For the second time this season, the Hampton Pirates went on the road and swept a Big South Conference series behind senior
Davion Warren scoring 18 of his game-high 27 in the second half as Hampton held off USC Upstate 84-74 on Friday night.
Hampton (7-8, 6-4) used a 12-4 spurt midway in the first half to gain a 25-14 lead on a pair of Warren free throws with 8:26 remaining. USC Upstate responded with eight unanswered to trim the lead to 25-22 after a Bryson Monzone 3-pointer at the 7:01 mark.Â
The Pirates answered that 8-0 Upstate run with a 10-0 burst as a
Chris Shelton 3-pointer put the guests ahead 35-22 with 3:50 left.Â
Marquis Godwin played beat the buzzer with a 3-pointer to give Hampton a 43-32 halftime advantage.
In the second half, the lead used a 10-4 run to start the half to take its largest lead of the night as Russell Dean took a feed from Warren and hit a layup for a 53-36 advantage with 15:08 left. USC Upstate trimmed it to nine on several occasions, the last being on a Monzone dunk with 2:12 remaining to trail 74-65. Hampton was 12-of-14 from the line, with Dean going 8-for-8, in the final 4:10 to ice the win.
Dean had 18 points, six assists and seven rebounds, while going 12-of-13 from the foul line to join Warren in double figures. Also in the double figure club was Shelton with 16 points and Godwin with 13.
Hampton returns home to face Campbell on Tuesday at 6 pm in Big South action.
