HAMPTON, Va. – A swarming defensive start and blistering pace offensively helped give Hampton a 66-51 win over Radford in Big South Conference action on Tuesday night.
Hampton started the game scoring 11 of the first 12 points to lead 11-1 after an
Alexis Wooden jumper with 4:01 left. That advantage grew to 16-3 after a
Nas Nigatu layup with 2:51 remaining. The Lady Pirates forced nine turnovers in the opening quarter and held Radford to 1-of-7 from the floor.
Radford's first field goal came with 1:43 left on a layup by Danielle Montelbano for a 16-5 margin. Hampton responded with a jumper by
Dlayla Chakolis and a free throw by
Jermany Mapp to lead 19-5 with 64 seconds left in the first.
The lead grew to as much as 24 points on a pair of
Laren VanArsdale free throws with 6:57 left as Hampton took a 55-31 lead. Radford answered with a 17-5 run trimming the lead to 60-48 as Makalia Wilson drained a 3-pointer with 3:01 remaining and that was as close as the Highlanders got.
Nylah Young paced Hampton in scoring with 15 points, while
Tia Montagne had nine points and a career high eight steals and
Victoria Davis added nine points and seven assists.
Hampton (4-7, 4-5) now goes on the road for a pair of games at UNC Asheville starting at 5 pm on Friday and then again on 3pm on Saturday.
