HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton volleyball team used a quick 8-0 start on Friday night as momentum to sweep Radford 25-14, 25-15, 27-25 at Holland Hall in Big South Conference action. The 3-0 win was the first for Hampton since opening the 2019 season with a pair of 3-0 wins over Norfolk State.
Brooklyn Irvin was the first server for Hampton and she used a pair of aces and a pair of kills from
Gabby Calloway to help springboard the Lady Pirates to the early 8-0 lead. Radford got as close as six points at 15-9 following a Kennedi Johnson kill, but Hampton pushed the advantage up to 11 at 23-12 as
Nevena Santrac had a pair of kills in that spurt.
The second set saw Hampton jump out to a 7-1 lead after an attack error by Radford and that lead grew to 14-4 following a pair of kills by
Gabby Calloway. Radford closed to as close as eight points, the last being at 23-15, but Hampton used a service error and then an ace by Calloway to win 25-15.
In the final set, the teams were tied 11 times and saw three lead changes. Hampton held a 14-9 lead before the Highlanders overtook them at 18-17 after a kill by Samantha Reitz. The teams went back and forth as a
Clara Smith kill stopped a last ditch comeback to put Hampton up 25-24. A pair of attack errors by Radford closed out the third set and gave Hampton the match win.
Smith had 10 kills to lead Hampton to go with three blocks. Calloway added nine kills and 16 digs, while Santrac had nine kills and five digs.
Leanna Caldwell had 11 digs, while
Madison Clark added six kills and two blocks. Irvin had 13 assists, four digs and four aces, while
Julieta Campana added 16 assists.
Hampton is now off until October 29 when they host High Point at 5 pm.
