Nylah Young scored 17 points with six rebounds, while
Madison Buford added 12 points and eight boards as Hampton won its first game of the 2021-22 season defeating Delaware State 51-36 on Thursday night.
The 36 points allowed is the lowest in a game by Hampton since defeating Bethune-Cookman 43-35 on Dec. 9, 2013.
A Kiana Coomber jumper put Delaware St. up 15-12 at the eight-minute mark and then Hampton turned up the defense going on a 16-2 run that stretched into the third quarter. A layup from Buford with 80 seconds left gave them a 22-17 lead. A pair of
Victoria Mason layups gave Hampton a 28-17 lead with 5:48 left in the third.
Young scored the last eight points of the game as her jumper with 51 seconds left gave Hampton its largest lead at 49-33. Mason just missed double figures with eight points and a team-high four steals, while
Victoria Davis added seven points.
Hampton hits the home hardwood on Saturday facing Richmond at 5pm to start a doubleheader with the men.
