HAMPTON, Va. – Junior
Shawn Mills scored a season high 12 points and matched her season high with five rebounds and two steals as Hampton dropped a 53-42 decision to Radford on Tuesday night in Big South Conference action.
After trailing 6-0 in the first 65 seconds, the Lady Pirates tied the game at six on a layup by
Victoria Mason with 6:09 left in the opening quarter. The teams traded buckets as a Mills layup put the hosts up 11-10 with 37 seconds left in the first. A jumper from Taiye Johnson put Radford up 12-11 with 21 seconds remaining.
In the second, Radford would take a four-point lead, then the Lady Pirates would tie it twice as Mills scored on a pair of layups at the 8:15 and 5:59 marks. She hit another layup with 4:05 left in the half to give Hampton a 21-20 lead.Â
Nylah Young hit a pair of free throws for a 23-all tie and
Victoria Mason hit one of two with 16 seconds left for a 24-all halftime score.
Mills hit a jumper with 5:14 left in the third which gave Hampton a 30-29 advantage. That was the last points for Hampton until the 9:42 mark of the fourth as Radford went on a 10-0 run capped by a pair of Kyanna Morgan free throws to lead 39-30 with 9:42 left.
Hampton cut the lead to five on two occasions, the last being a Mason steal and layup with 5:14 left to trail 41-36. Mason finished with seven points and five steals, while
Victoria Davis had seven and four steals.
Hampton now travels to league leading High Point for a two-game set starting Friday at 2 pm.
