No. 19-ranked Richmond (5-2, 3-1) scored the game's first 17 points before shutting out Hampton (4-3, 1-3) in the second half to post a 41-10 victory over the Pirates before a Homecoming audience of 11,403 at Hampton's Armstrong Stadium.
Richmond scored touchdowns on drives of 75 and 80 yards in the first half sandwiched between an 18-yard field goal by Andrew Lopez to build a 17-0 lead.
Darran Butts caught a 74-yard scoring pass from
Malcolm Mays to put the Pirates on the board. Following a Spider score, Hampton's
Axel Perez booted a 24-yard field goal just before halftime, making the score 24-10 at intermission.
Richmond extended the lead to 31-10 early in the second half on a 13-yard pass from Reece Udinski to Leroy Henley. Lopez added a 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter before Fonnae Webb broke loose for an 87-yard TD run with 2:11 remaining in the contest.
