NORFOLK, VA – The Lady Pirates sweep day two of the NSU-Hampton Classic and start off 3-1 to begin the season on Sunday.
In the first game against Hartford University, Hampton won by mercy rule in the fifth inning 13-0.
Kiaya Jeusi (W, 1-0) tossed five strong innings, giving up just a single hit.
The Lady Pirates struck first in the bottom of the third inning when
Samyah Richardson scored on an error, giving them a 1-0 lead. In the bottom of the fourth inning, Hampton had blown the game wide open, posting 12 runs and nine hits including a three-run homerun by
Jada Evans and a two-run homerun by
Kiaya Jeusi, finishing off Hartford.
In the second game, a rematch against Norfolk State, Hampton outlasted a late game push by the Spartans to win 3-2.
Emily Workman (W, 2-0) pitched six innings, giving up just one earned run.
Tiera Washington, who reached on an error in the top of the first, scored off a sacrifice flyout by
Janae Lyles, putting the Lady Pirates up 1-0. In the top of the fourth inning,
Janae Lyles would provide a two-run homerun, putting the Lady Pirates up 3-0. The Spartans would come back to post two runs in the sixth inning. Jeusi, who was pitching in relief, picked up a game-ending strike out with a runner on second base sealing the win.
The Lady Pirates come home to face Central Connecticut State in a double header Friday, February 18 at 1 and 3 p.m.
