Lady Pirates Fall to Coastal Athletic Association Leaders Towson 3-0

HAMPTON, Va. (Oct. 1st, 2023) … Hampton University women's soccer team fell to Towson this afternoon at Powhatan Field. The Lady Pirates were able to hold the conference's top offense to just three goals. While HU would be a player down for most of the second half, Hampton was able to keep the possession battle close.

How it Happened

In the opening minutes of the match, the Lady Pirates were able to fend off any chances that the Tigers produced. However, Towson would dominate the possession battle for the first 30 minutes. TU created a total of nine shots during this stretch and found the back of the net twice. In the 35th minute freshman Mattie Edozie picked up a yellow card. Leah Johnson would also receive a booking with seconds remaining in the half. '

Coming out of the half, Hampton's defense continued to stop Towson consistently. In the 57th minute of the match, HU's Alexis Deveaux would make history. The Fort Lauderdale Fla. native broke the single-season record for total saves. The Lady Pirates also gave up fewer shots in the final 45 minutes as well.

With Mattie Edozie picking up a red card in the second half, HU would have to play a man down. Elizabeth Kelly would create the Lady Pirates' first shot of the match. Kelly was able to create space during the corner kick but just missed the goal. Towson with less than three minutes remaining was able to score once more taking advantage of Hampton being a player down.
