HAMPTON, Va. (Nov. 30, 2023)  Hampton Director of Athletics Anthony D. Henderson, Sr. has announced a leadership change in the women's volleyball program. Coach Sonja Maksimovic has been relieved of her duties as head volleyball coach, effective immediately.

"As part of my thorough and continued evaluation, I have determined that a change in leadership is necessary to move our volleyball program forward and position it for the highest level of success," Henderson said. "I have the utmost respect for Sonja and am incredibly appreciative of the effort she put forth in leading our volleyball program. However, the progress and on-court results have not been of the standard required for Hampton to achieve the level of success we need and expect."

Maksimovic took over the Hampton program in 2020, and her teams posted a 6-57 (.095) record in three seasons. The 2020 season was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The 2023 team posted a 0-21 record.

"We have already begun a national search to identify the next leader of our volleyball program, and we will work quickly but most importantly as thoroughly as possible," said Henderson. "With the department's standard of excellence and our strong fan support for Hampton Athletics, I am confident that we will find a tremendous coach to lead us into the future."
