Hampton (14-26) split a doubleheader with visiting Maryland-Eastern Shore (13-26), winning the first game 11-3 before falling in the finale, 6-4. Nicol Ley went 3-8, scored two runs and drove in two more for the Lady Pirates on the afternoon.
Nursing a 4-3 lead after five innings in the first game, the Lady Pirates erupted for seven runs in the sixth inning. Hampton was aided by two Maryland-Eastern Shore errors in the inning. Carmynn Bonner belted a key triple and a Ley had a two-run single as the Lady Pirates pulled away. Pitcher Emily Workman (5-6) scattered seven hits in six innings allowed two earned runs in the victory.
The Eagles turned the tables in the second game of the doubleheader. Holding a 4-3 lead, the Eagles scored two runs in the top of the seventh to build a 6-3 lead. The Lady Pirates answered with a run In the bottom of the frame but were unable to complete the comeback, falling 6-4. Jada Evans (4-9) absorbed the loss allowing 11 hits and six runs in 6.2 innings.
Hampton hosts North Carolina A&T State for a three-game set on April 29-30. The two teams play a doubleheader on Friday, April 29, beginning at 1:00 p.m. Hampton will celebrate Senior Day on Saturday, April 30 with the first pitch at 3:00 p.m.
