Lady Pirates Soccer Drop Season Opener to Robert Morris

Hampton, Va. (August 18, 2023)… Hampton University women's soccer opened the 2023 campaign with a close 1-0 loss to the Colonials of Robert Morris University. While it would take the Lady Pirates time to adjust to RMU's style of play, they eventually started to put pressure on RMU.

How it Happened

Robert Morris early in the match was able to create a chance putting pressure on Hampton in the beginning minutes. However, goalkeeper Alexis Deveaux stopped the Colonial's attack on multiple occasions in the first thirty minutes. While the Lady Pirates produced a shot goal around the seven-minute mark, the offense did not start to click until later in the first half.

With the score still tied at 0-0 HU manufactured a suburb chance to take control of the contest. The Pirates were able to advance the ball into the Robert Morris final third with strong play through the midfield. Mattie Edozie got a shot off through traffic but just missed hitting the crossbar. Hampton maintained possession and had another opportunity, but it would be stopped by RMU's keeper once more.

During the waning minutes of the first half, the Colonial's Lidia Nduka found the back of the net on a penalty kick. Heading into the half HU trailed, but still had plenty of time to even things up.

Both squads coming out of the half were desperate to score. The Lady Pirates would double their amount of shots in the second half, while RMU would be held to only six attempts. Deveaux continued to answer the call making four more saves during the remainder of the match. With around 15 minutes of action left, Hampton produced another strong opportunity to score. Makayla Wade's free-kick looked like it could be the equalizer that HU was looking for. However, RMU's goalkeeper once again withstood the attack.

In the final 45 minutes, the contest became much more physical. The first half's foul total would be doubled. This increase in physicality led to Hampton's Elizabeth Kelly picking up a yellow card. While the Lady Pirates created four more chances in the final ten minutes, they could not find the back of the net.
