Hampton Women’s Volleyball Drop Final Match of the Henson Hawk Invitational

Princess Anne, Md. (Sept. 9, 2023) … Hampton women's volleyball ended the Henson Hawk Invitational with a loss to the Gardner-Webb Bulldogs (25-7, 25-7, 25-14).

The Lady Pirates fought throughout with a limited roster. Maria Eduarda Rodrigues led HU in kills with Cortni Adams and freshman Rhisen Davis were close behind. Rodrigues also had a team-high four digs. Along with Maria Eduarda, sophomore Tyler Williams produced four digs as well.

Set 1

HU was able to get on the board early scoring the first point of the set. While the Bulldogs rattled off four straight points, the Lady Pirates were able to battle back. With kills by Maria Eduarda Rodrigues and Tyler Williams, Gardner-Webb's advantage shrunk to one. A 17-2 run by the Bulldogs gave them control of the first set. While a kill by Rhisen Davis made it (22-7), GWU rattled off three consecutive points to end the frame.

Set 2

Hampton got off to a slow start committing five attack errors. The Bulldogs used this to their advantage to score 11 straight points. A kill by freshman Rhisen Davis ended the streak. HU would split the next six points, but an 11-3 by Gardner-Webb helped them pull away.

Set 3

The final set started out as a close battle between both squads. While GWU jumped out to an early (6-3) advantage,  HU found a way to tie it up (9-9). A kill by Tyler Williams sparked a 6-3 started the run that made it all square. Lady Pirates' Kylah Hunter ended the hot streak with a service ace. Just as the Bulldogs did in the first two sets, a major run shifted the momentum in their favor. With Gardner-Webb taking 15 of the last 20 points, GWU secured the third frame and the match.
