Lady Pirates Fall on the Road to the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington

WILMINGTON, N.C. (Sept. 14, 2023) … Hampton women's soccer traveled south to face the Seahawks of UNC Wilmington for a CAA match.  The Lady Pirates' offense would only be held to a season-low one shot on goal. With HU unable to find the back of the net UNC Wilmington prevailed 7-0.

How it Happened

Both teams in the first ten minutes struggled to get any offense going. Early on Hampton controlled the possession battle keeping it in UNCW's half. The  Lady Pirates would receive two quick bookings with Mattie Edozie and Kennedy Childress picking up a yellow card.

In the span of five minutes, the Seahawks were able to find the back of the net twice. Returning from injury Emily Blowbliss delivered the first blow from inside the box. UNC Wilmington's Kayla Burroughs scored the second goal of the match breaking away from HU's back line.

The Lady Pirates were able to produce their first shot of the match in the 27th minute. Makayla Wade from about 30 yards out decided to test the keeper on the free kick. Wade's shot was tracking towards the goal but just missed slightly to the right. During the remainder of the first half, both sides combined for a total of three shots.

Early on in the second half, Hampton was able to create their first shot on goal of the night. Sierra Vincent broke away from the Seahawk marking her to get the shot off. UNC Wilmington's goalkeeper would produce the save halting HU's attack.

The Lady Pirates created two more chances in the final 30 minutes, but could not find the back of the net. UNCW's offense continued to fire on all cylinders producing five more goals. With the Seahawks controlling possession in the second half, Hampton's offense would be held to minimal opportunities.
