Lady Pirates End Consecutive Back-To-Back Road Games With a Loss

ELON, N.C. (Sept. 28, 2023) Hampton University women's soccer team ended their two game road trip with a 9-0 loss to Elon. Out of the gate, the Phoenix started with a very offensive formation using four forwards. With the Lady Pirates facing continuous pressure, the offense could not find their rhythm.

How it Happened

Elon's offensive tactical approach was able to catch Hampton off guard. The Phoenix were able to strike first in the second minute and did not look back. Within the first 15 minutes, Elon found the back of the net on four more separate occasions. Hampton could not create their first chance until the 20th minute. Freshman Morgan Edwards broke away from EU's back line but just missed the post.

After only committing one foul in the first 20 minutes, the Lady Pirates would pick up two yellow cards. Before the end of the half, HU committed five more fouls. With Elon winning the possession battle 66 percent to 34 percent, Hampton finished the first 45 minutes with only one shot.

Coming out of the half, the Lady Pirates were able to produce their second shot of the evening rather quickly. Captain Lailah Daniel was able to find space inside the penalty box. However, her shot just missed high almost clipping the frame. HU surpassed their first-half shot total and finished the match with six shots.

Elon's offense in the second half struggled early on. During the final thirty minutes, the Pheonix found the back of the four more times.  The Lady Pirates picked up one more yellow card before the final horn.
