Lady Pirates Split Final Two Games of Stinger Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Feb. 10, 2024) … Hampton University softball team wrapped up the Stinger Classic facing Mississippi Valley State and Austin Peay. In the Lady Pirates' win over the Devilettes, HU recorded a season-high 14 hits. Freshman Taryn Bennett got the win picking up her first collegiate win. In game two Hampton's offense struggled to produce. With a strong third inning, the Governors were able to come out on top.

Game One

The Lady Pirates' bats got going early against Mississippi Valley State. In the first inning alone HU was able to produce five hits. Carmyn Bonner started the contest with a double down the left-field line. Bonner finished game one with two hits and an RBI. Before the Devilettes could record an out Hampton made it 3-0 with Brooke Williams and Emily Kepple driving in runs.

Coach Monique White's squad continued to build upon its advantage in the third frame. Kepple began the inning with a double down the left-field line. Freshman Santrea Armstead drove in Kepple with her second hit of the game. The Lady Pirates had half of their 14 hits in the third. With Lady Pirates' bats on fire and MVSU committing a couple of errors, Hampton had a nine-run advantage.

Hampton's bullpen had another solid outing. Freshman Taryn Bennett got the start for the Lady Pirates. Bennett pitched four innings and produced six strikeouts while only walking two batters. While Jordyn Scott came into the contest in the fifth inning, Bennett picked up her first win of her collegiate career.

Hampton drove in one more run top of the fifth with Leah Maduro's single up the middle. While the Devilettes scored a run of their own, Hampton still came out on top 10-1.

Game Two

Both sides struggled to produce any offense early on. Hampton and Austin Peay recorded only one hit through the first two innings. At the top of the third, the Lady Pirates had their first base runner of the afternoon with Meagan Ramos. Ramos was able to advance to second on a wild pitch. However, the Governors got out of the jam producing three consecutive outs.

Austin Peay's offense started to get going in the bottom of the frame. The Governors began the inning with a double through the left side. With Austin Peay producing five hits in the third, they were able to score five runs. The Lady Pirates got out of the inning with a strikeout from Angelina Branch

While Hampton started the fourth inning with back-to-back outs, Emily Kepple ripped a single to right field. Austin Peay was able to get out of the frame once more. The Governors extended their lead in the bottom of the fourth. Three more runs would cross making it 8-0. HU began the fifth with a double down the right-field line from Santrea Armstead.
