Lady Pirates Fall to Bryant and Coppin State on Day One of the Battle at the Bay

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 16, 2024) … Hampton University softball team had its home opener and kicked off the Battle at the Bay. The Lady Pirates dropped its first game of the day to Bryant 7-6. Later in the afternoon, HU faced former MEAC foe Coppin State. With a strong fourth inning from the Eagles, Hampton fell 6-5.

Game One

In the first inning, the Bulldogs were able to get two runs up on the board. While Bryant only produced two hits, they took advantage of a couple of errors made by the Lady Pirates. However, Hampton responded in the bottom half of the frame. HU had their first baserunner of the game with Carmynn Bonner. With BU committing two errors in the inning, Bonner scored making it a one-run game.

Coach Monique White's squad surged in the second inning. The Lady Pirates with only hit in the inning scored three runs. Bonner with a single to the outfield drove in the tying run. Before Bryant could record the final out-of-frame two runners came across the plate on a passed ball.

Emily Workman got the start for Hampton in game one. The Kingston, Tenn. native, went three innings for HU while striking out three batters. Freshman Angelina Branch was called out of the bullpen after the first batter in the top of the fourth. While Branch walked her first batter, Hampton's defense picked up two quick outs with a double play. The Bulldogs still were able to tie it up with a two-run homer from Aleix Hudson.

Just as they did in the first frame, Hampton responded in the bottom half of the inning. Kylie Hill recorded her first hit of the contest. After a walk loaded the bases, Hill scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch. Later on in the fifth, the Lady Pirates increased their advantage with an RBI single from Santrea Armstead

In the final inning, the Bulldogs scored three runs taking the lead late. HU would have one last chance in the seventh but could not generate any baserunners.

Game Two

Hampton found themselves trailing early to Coppin State. With the deficit only being one run the Lady Pirates were able to overcome CSU's early advantage. In the bottom of the third, Hampton's bats caught fire producing five hits. Santrea Armstead started off the frame with a single through the left side. With Kyle Quinn's speed, she was able to reach first on the bunt. Sophomore Aitirhna Aiken drove in HU's first runs of the game with a knock of the middle. Before the end of the third, three more runs came across for Hampton.

Coppin State quickly answered the Lady Pirates' surge in the next inning. CSU's offense exploded with five hits of their own. The Eagles during this stretch would only have one double but used their speed to drive in runs. While Coppin State took the lead 6-5, HU still had plenty of time to regain control.

Coppin State's Vanessa Carrizosa came into the game during the third frame. In her four-plus inning of work, she silenced Hampton's bats only giving up three hits. In the bottom half of the seventh, Aiken recorded her second hit of the contest. With the Eagles already recording tow-outs, they were able to get out of the jam.

Hampton Softball returns to action tomorrow at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium at 10:00 AM against Wagner. The Lady Pirates close out the Battle at the Bay at 3:00 PM against Coppin State.
