Hampton Softball Falls to Lindenwood and Marist at Gardner-Webb Tournament

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (Feb. 24, 2024) … Hampton University's Softball team ended day two of the Gardner-Webb Tournament with a 4-1 loss to Lindenwood and fell to Marist 7-4. Carmynn Bonner had a solid second day recording a total of four hits and only struck out once. Freshman Megan Ramos would be the only other Lady Pirate to record a hit on both contests.

Game One

Hampton was able to get on the board first against Lindenwood. In the top of the second, Brooke Williams opened the frame with an infield single. With the basses loaded Meagan Ramos drove in a run on a single to the outfield. The Lions were able to get out of the jam getting the next three batters out.

While the Lady Pirates continued to produce hits, they could not build upon their advantage. Lindenwood in the bottom of the third tied it up 1-1. Before Hampton could record an out, the Lions had runners on second and third. The tying run came across on a groundout to the left side of the infield.  However, HU's defense got out of the inning with two consecutive flyouts.

Throughout the final three innings of the contest, Hampton's bats would be held silent. Lindenwood in the bottom of the fourth increased its advantage to two. Later on the sixth another run came across making it 4-1.

Game Two

Just as the Lady Pirates did in game one, HU got on the board first. Kylie Hill led off the contest with a double to left field. With Carmynn Bonner's single during the next at-bat, Coach Monique White's squad had runners on first and third. While Bonner was out on the stolen base attempt, Hill was able to score on the throw.

In the bottom half of the frame, Marist was able to drive in the tying run. The Red Foxes had an early single to the outfield from Peyon Pusey. After a flyout to centerfield MU tied it up with a double to right field. Jordyn Scott got the start for Hampton.

The Lady Pirates regained their early advantage in the top of the fifth. While Marist produced two quick outs, HU made 3-1 with Megan Ramos and Taylor Ivey driving in runs. During the next frame, Hampton continued to build upon its lead. Bonner early in the inning produced a single to left field. In game two Bonner went 3-4 from the plate and had a double. Once again with two outs, the Lady Pirates were able to score.

Marist bats caught on fire in the bottom of the sixth. Before Hampton could record an out the Red Foxes tallied four hits. MU with a double and a knock to the outfield erased Hampton's three-run lead. While the Lady Pirates bounced back with a strikeout another three runs would come across making 7-4. Hampton had one more chance to make to regain its advantage. With Marist manufacturing three quick outs, the Lady Pirates ran out of time.

The Lady Pirates close out the Gardner-Webb Tournament tomorrow against Gardner-Webb at noon. Hampton has already faced the Runnin' Bulldogs once this season. The Manassas, Va. native pitched over four innings. After the early run, Scott pitched three consecutive scoreless innings.
