Hampton Softball Splits Day One of Stinger Classic

MONTGOMERY, Ala. (Feb. 9, 2023) … Hampton University softball team opened the 2024 campaign at the Stinger Classic. The Lady Pirates dropped their first game to Western Carolina 3-0. HU defeated the Hornets of Alabama State 4-0 in their second game this afternoon. Freshman Angelina Branch had a stellar start to her collegiate career producing 10 strikeouts and only giving up three hits.

Game One

Hampton's Emily Workman and the Catamount's Tessa Juett had strong starts to the contest. The Lady Pirates in the bottom of the second inning had a chance to get on the board first. Brooke Williams started out the frame with a single of the middle. With Kylie Hill producing a knock to center field. Hampton had runners on first and second. HU was able to move the runners on a sacrifice bunt, but Western Carolina was able to get out of the jam.

In the top of the fourth WCU was able to score the game's first run. With a double to start out the inning, the Catamounts advanced the runner on a sacrifice bunt. While the next batter would fly out to center field, the runner still crossed the plate. Later in the frame, a triple from WCU's Savanah Baldwin cleared the basses making it 3-0.

Jada Evens came in midway through the bottom of the fourth to relieve Workman. Evens through her three-plus innings of work only gave up two hits. While the Seaford, Del. native, only had one strikeout, she only gave up two hits. Throughout the remainder of the game, Juett kept the Lady Pirates bats quiet. In the final four innings, she would not give up a single hit.

Game Two

HU got out to a quick 1-0 lead against the Hornets. In the top of the third, Camryn Thompson got the Lady Pirates offense going with a single through the left side. Later on in the frame, Taylor Ivey produced a single to left field moving Thompson over to third. With Ivey moving to second on the through, Hampton had runners in scoring position. Coach Monique White's squad took advantage of an error made by Alabama State.

Freshman Angelina Branch dominated in her first career start. Through the first three innings, she did not allow a single hit. The Chesterfield, Va. native, pitched a shutout while producing 10 strikeouts. Branch would also only allow three hits and walked one batter.

In the top of the fifth, the Lady Pirates had an opportunity to extend their lead with Carmynn Bonner's single putting a runner on third. While Alabama State's defense got them out of a jam, HU got on the board once more in the sixth inning. Hampton started out the frame with two quick outs. The Lady Pirates during their next two at-bats quickly manufactured runners on second and third. Once again Hampton's youth came in clutch. Freshman Kylie Hill cleared the basses with a triple making it 3-0.

Coach White's squad was able to do more damage in the final frame. With Bonner's second single of the game, HU had a base runner early. Bonner was able to advance to third on consecutive wild pitches. Another error by Alabama State brought in Bonner extending the Lady Pirates advantage. After ASU flew out to center field, Hampton's Angelina Branch closed out the game with a strikeout.

The Lady Pirates close out the Stinger Classic tomorrow against Mississippi Valley State and Austin Peay. HU's first game of the day is against the Devilettes at 12:00 PM EST. Hampton will end the afternoon against the Governors at 6:00 PM EST.
