Lady Pirates Drop Final Contest of Monmouth Series 6-3

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. (March 17, 2024) … Hampton University Softball team dropped the final contest of the Monmouth series 6-3. While the Lady Pirates recorded nine hits, HU could not keep the Hawks bats quiet. MU was able to score in four of the first five innings. Hampton jumped out to an early lead but could not maintain its two-run advantage.

Coach Monique White's squad got on the board first in the top half of the opening frame. Carmynn Bonner continued where she left off with a lead-off single to the outfield. Aitirhna Aiken's double gave the Lady Pirates runners in scoring position early. The bases would be loaded after Brooke Williams reached first on a walk. Freshman Leah Maduro's base knock to center field drove in two runs.  Monmouth got out of the jam by producing consecutive outs.

During the next two innings, the Hawks quickly erased Hampton's early advantage. In the bottom half of the first one run came across the plate on a single up the middle. However, the Lady Pirates got out of the stanza on a groundout to second.  In the following frame, MU took its first lead of the game 3-2. Monmouth's bats continued to produce recording three more hits. With Hampton committing an error, the Hawks put two more runs up on the board.

Throughout the remainder of the contest, MU continued to build upon its advantage. A run would come across the plate in the fourth on a single to the outfield. HU went to its bullpen calling upon Taryn Bennet to get out of the frame. The Bothell, Wash. native, tallied back-to-back strikeouts. Monmouth once again produced three hits in the bottom of the fifth. While the Lady Pirates got two quick outs to start the stanza, MU still was able to score runs. A double to left field and a single up the middle made 6-2 in favor of the Hawks.

Hampton in its final three outs started to dig into the Hawk's four-run lead. Early on the seventh, the Lady Pirates had a runner-in-scoring position with Bonner's second hit of the game. Emily Keeple also recorded her second hit of the afternoon. Her single to the outfield brought Bonner in making it 6-3. HU on its next at-bat grounded out to the shortstop ending the contest.

The Lady Pirates are back in action Tuesday against rivals Norfolk State. First pitch for Tuesday's contest at NSU Softball Field is set for 5:30 p.m.
