The Lady Pirates Defeat Norfolk State 13-4

NORFOLK, Va. (March 19, 2024) … Hampton University defeated former MEAC foe Norfolk State 13-4. The Lady Pirates' bats were on fire recording 12 hits through the five-inning contest. In the top of the fifth, HU brought across eight runs. With the Spartans not scoring a run in the bottom half of the frame, Coach Monique White's squad ended the contest.

Both sides were held scoreless through the first stanza. During the next inning, the Lady Pirates stuck first jumping out to an early lead. Freshman Leah Maduro led off the second with a single up the middle. HU's next batter got on base due to a fielding error by NSU. On a passed ball Hampton quickly had runners on second and third. Kylee Quinn drove in Hampton's first run with a sacrifice fly to the outfield. The Lady Pirates ended the half inning up 2-0 since the Spartans committed another error.

However, Norfolk State responded in the bottom half of the frame. Half of the Spartan's eight hits came in the second inning. Similar to HU, Norfolk State had runners on first and second with no outs. A three-run homer by NSU's Lauren Sheehan put them up by one 3-2. Before Hampton could get out of the frame, the Spartans doubled their advantage.

At the top of the third, Aitirhna Aikent tied the game with a two-RBI double to left center field. In the following inning, the Lady Pirates brought in another run to regain their early lead. While Hampton's offense was consistent throughout the contest, at the top of the fifth HU recorded 75 percent of its 12 hits. Emily Kepple started off the stanza with a single to the outfield. With two outs on the board, Emily Workman recorded her first career hit. Workman's double to centerfield brought in two runs making it 7-4. Coach Monique White's squad did most of their damage with two outs producing six more runs in the fifth.

The Lady Pirates held the Spartans scoreless in the bottom half of the fifth. Along with tallying her first career hit Workman picked up her second win of the 2024 campaign. Carmynn Bonner would be one of three Hampton players to finish the contest with two or more hits. Kepple went a perfect 3-3 from the plate while producing two RBIs

HU is back in action at home this Friday returning to Coastal Athletic Association play against Charleston. Friday's game will begin a three-game series with the Cougars.
