Lady Pirates Win in Extra Innings Taking Game Three From Drexel

HAMPTON, Va. (April 14, 2024) … Hampton University softball team won in extra innings defeating the Dragons 7-6. While the Lady Pirates were ahead early Drexel took a two-run lead. Coach Monique White's squad scored three runs in the sixth to take a one-run advantage. With the Dragons bringing three runs across the plate in the final two frames, Hampton entered the bottom of the eighth down two. The Lady Pirates were down to their last out and scored the winning run. 

Hampton was able to get on the board first in the opening frame of the contest. Carmynn Bonner began the first frame with a walk. With two outs on the board, Brooke Williams hit a single to the outfield. Freshman Leah Maduro on a base knock brought in Bonner making it 1-0. The Miami, Fla. native, went 2-4 from the plate.

Drexel took control of the contest in the third inning. While the Dragons only had three hits in the stanza they bright two runs across the plate. DU had a lead off single to start the third. A double to right field tied the contest 1-1. Hampton got the second out of the frame but the ball to deep right field scored a run. At the top of the fifth, the Dragons brought in another run on a sacrifice fly.

The Lady Pirates regained their early advantage in the sixth frame. Brooke Williams gave Hampton a spark with a double to center field.  The Dragons committed an error allowing one run to cross. With back-to-back singles, the bases would be loaded for HU. Bonner with her second hit of the contest gave Hampton one run lead heading into the final inning. 

Drexel found a way to tie it up 4-4 in the top of the seventh. The Dragon's bats continued to produce in the eighth. Hampton got a quick out to start the frame. However, Drexel rallied off three consecutive hits jumping out to a two-run advantage. The Lady Pirates were able to get out of the jam with a flyout. 

Down to their last three outs, Hampton found a way to walk it off in the bottom of the eighth. The Lady Pirates loaded the base hits by Kylee Quinn and Camryn Thompson along with Kylee Quinn drawing a walk. With two outs on the board Freshman Angelina Branch tied it up on a single to the outfield. During the next at-bat, Hampton took advantage of a miscue made by the Dragons scoring the winning run. 

The Lady Pirates return to action on April 17th against North Carolina Central. Wednesday's contest is a doubleheader beginning at 12:30 p.m.
