Lady Pirates Sweep North Carolina Central in Mid-Week Doubleheader

HAMPTON, Va. (April 17, 2024) … Hampton Softball continues its winning ways taking both contests in today's doubleheader against North Carolina Central. The Lady Pirates took game one by a score of 6-2. Coach Monique White's squad in the second contest defeated the Eagles 9-4. Hampton's bats were on fire combing for 17 hits in both games.

Game One

North Carolina Central was able to jump out to an early lead in the top of the first. With the Lady Pirates' bullpen issuing two walks, NCCU loaded the bases with a single to the outfield. The Eagles brought in a run on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0. While Hampton recorded a hit in the first, they could not bring in Taylor Ivey.

During the bottom of the third inning, the Lady Pirates took control of the contest scoring five runs. Hampton started out the frame with back-to-back walks. With a hard-hit infield single, Emily Kepple loaded the bases. HU tied the game up with the Eagles' third walk of the stanza. Freshman Kylie gave the Lady Pirates the lead on a base-clearing triple. Before the end of the third, HU lead 5-1.

Coach White's squad increased its advantage later at the bottom of the fourth. Brooke Williams on a double to the outfield made it a five-run contest. The Eagles would dig into Hampton's advantage scoring a run in the fifth. North Carolina Central threatened to score once again in the seventh frame. With only one out on the board, the Eagles had runners on first and second. However, the Lady Pirates defense produced the final two outs of the contest.

Angelina Branch picked up her second win of the season. The Freshman in her four innings of work only allowed two hits while giving a run. Taryn Bennett was credited with the save for her three innings of effective pitching.

Game Two

The Eagles were able to strike first just as they did in game one. This time the Lady Pirates answered in the bottom half of the first. Carmynn Bonner during her first at-bat homered to left field. The Dayton, Ohio native's home run was her second of the season.

Hampton in the third frame jumped out to a 4-1 lead. While the Lady Pirates only had three hits in the stanza, HU brought in three runs. With runners on second and third, Kylee Quinn gave Hampton the lead on a single to the outfield. North Carolina Central's bullpen issued consecutive walks allowing Raven Jackson to cross the plate. Before the Eagles recorded the second out of the inning, Taylor Ivey brought in the final run of the stanza on a base knock to the outfield.

Later on in the contest, North Carolina Central brought it back to within a one-run game in the top of the third. NCCU Jaylah Barr's two-run homer to right field made 4-3 Hampton would call upon its bullpen to bring in Emily Workman. Workman picked up the final out of the frame helping HU hold onto its advantage.

Throughout the next three innings, the Lady Pirates continued to build upon their early lead. In the bottom of the fourth, two runs came across the plate on a double by Brooke Williams.
