Lady Pirates Fall in a Pitchers Duel to the Pride, 1-0

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (April 27, 2024) … Hampton University softball team narrowly fell to the Hofstra Pride 1-0. Both sides were held scoreless through the first four innings. While the Lady Pirates had an excellent showing from freshman Angelina Branch, Hofstra's Julia Apsel was on fire producing eight strikeouts.  During the final two frames, Hampton's offense continued to be silenced.

The Lady Pirates found themselves in trouble early in the bottom of the second. With two outs on the board, the Pride had baserunners on first and second. However, Branch got HU out of the jam with her first strikeout of the afternoon. Heading into the bottom of the third, Hofstra had an early baserunner with a single in the infield. The Pride attempted to advance the baserunner on a steal by was caught stealing by Emily Keeple. 

While Branch had a solid outing for the Hampton only giving up one run, Hofstra's Julia Apsel was on fire. Apsel finished the contest with eight strikeouts. She would also not give up a single hit or walk halting Hampton's offense. 

In the bottom of the fifth, Hofstra scored the game's first run. A slew of errors made by the Lady Pirates helped the Pride put runners in scoring position. Hofstra continued to put pressure on Hampton by loading the bases with a walk. HU would produce its second out of the frame but the runner at third was able to tag up and score on the sacrifice fly to centerfield. The Lady Pirates go out of the inning on a groundout to the pitcher.

Hampton once again faced trouble in the bottom of the sixth inning. After giving up a leadoff walk, the Lady Pirates manufactured three consecutive outs. With the HU's bats held silent, the Pride held on to a 1-0 victory. The Lady Pirates are back in action tomorrow at noon
