Lady Pirates Drop Final Contest to Hofstra, 2-1

LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (April 28, 2024) … Hampton Softball concluded its three-game series against Hofstra with a 2-1 loss. The Lady Pirates threatened to score throughout the contest but only scored in the seventh frame. Hampton's late rally would not be enough to lift them past the Pride. HU's bullpen recorded nine strikeouts while only issuing two walks.

Hofstra got on the board in the bottom of the first. With a runner on second, a single to left field brought the contest's first run. Hampton got out of the inning by producing its second strikeout of the game. Hampton's bullpen finished the contest with nine strikeouts.

During the top of the third inning, Hampton had a solid opportunity to tie the game. The Lady Pirates started off the stanza with a walk. Taylor Ivey produced a base knock putting baserunners on first and second. A sacrifice bunt by Emily Kepple advanced both runners in scoring position. The Pride tallied back-to-back strikeouts halting the Lady Pirates' momentum.

In the bottom half of the third Hofstra doubled its advantage. The Pride began the frame with a single to the outfield. Hofstra brought in the leadoff runner on a double. After the RBI double, Angelina Branch was brought in from the bullpen. Branch gave up a hit in her first batter faced but Hampton got out of the inning producing three consecutive outs. The freshman in her four innings of work recorded seven strikeouts.

The Lady Pirates started to mount a comeback in the final inning. With two batters getting hit and a fielder's choice Hampton loaded the basses. Leah Maduro scored a run on a sacrifice fly to deep center field. The tying run was able to advance to third on the play. Hofstra during the next at-bat produced the final out.

Hampton returns to action at home on Tuesday, April 30th facing Norfolk State at 3:00 p.m.
