Six Runs in the Bottom of the Sixth Lifts Hampton Past Norfolk State

HAMPTON, Va. (April 30, 2024) … The Lady Pirates defeated former MEAC for Norfolk State 7-3. Through five innings Hampton trailed the Spartans but found a way to comeback. The Lady Pirates offense exploded in the bottom of the sixth scoring six runs on five hits. Brooke Williams had a suburb game going 3-3 from the plate with two doubles and a three-run home run. 

Through the first frame, both teams were held scoreless. The Spartans were able to strike first scoring a run in the second inning. Norfolk State began the stanza with a leadoff double to the outfield. The baserunner advanced to third on a wild pitch. While Hampton got the out on a groundout, NSU scored the runner making it 1-0. 

In the bottom of the fourth, the Lady Pirates tied the contest up. Brooke Williams with a double gave Hampton an early baserunner in scoring position. Williams would advance to third on a throwing error by the Spartans. Freshman Leah Maduro brought her in on a single through the right side of the infield. Norfolk State did get out of the fame producing back-to-back outs. 

The Spartans would regain their early advantage in the fifth. With back-to-back walks, NSU had runners on first and second before the Lady Pirates could record an out. After a groundout advanced the runners, an infield single brought two runners across the plate. 

Carmynn Bonner gave Hampton's offense a spark in the bottom of the sixth. Bonner opened the stanza up with a triple to center field. Taylor Ivey followed up the leadoff triple with a base knock cutting NSU's lead down to one. Brooke Williams gave Hampton a two-run advantage on her second home run of the season. Before Norfolk State recorded an out, the Lady Pirates brought in one more run. With Aitirhna Aiken scoring on a passed ball, HU entered the final frame up 7-3.

Hampton got the final three outs securing the win. Taryn Bennett picked up her eighth victory of the season. In her 2.1 innings of work, the freshman tallied three strikeouts and did give up a single. 

The Lady Pirates return to action Thursday for the final Coastal Athletic Association series of the 2024 campaign.
