Lady Pirates Drop Series Opener Against the Towson Tigers

HAMPTON, Va. (May 2, 2024) … Hampton University softball fell in a one-run contest to Towson 6-5. Both offenses were able to produce recording nine hits each. The Tigers took the lead in the third inning scoring three runs. While Hampton had multiple two-run frames, the Lady Pirates could not tie the contest in the final two stanzas.

Towson was able to get on the board at the top of the first. The Tigers began the contest with a single to left field. After a stolen base TU brought in the run taking advantage of an error made by the Lady Pirates. In the bottom of the frame, Hampton responded quickly tying the contest up 1-1. HU had runners on first and third with only one out. Brooke Williams continued her offensive streak with a RBI single in the infield.

Later on in the top of the third, the Tigers jumped out to another advantage. HU produced two quick outs but in the next at-bat, Towson hit a double to the outfield. Back-to-back hits brought in three runs making it 4-1. Hampton would give up one more hit before the end of the stanza.

The Lady Pirates in the fourth inning made it a one-run contest. Freshman Leah Maduro gave HU's offense a spark with a single. After Aitirhna Aiken's base knock Hampton had baserunners on second and third. Angelina Branch came up clutch producing a double down the left field scoring Maduro and Aiken. While Branch advanced to third on a groundout, Hampton could bring the tying run across the plate.

Towson regained its three-run lead in the fifth. TU started the inning with a home run deep to right field. The Lady Pirates with two outs were not able to get out of the frame. After a single by the Tigers, HU manufactured the second out. However, an error by Hampton allowed another the final run to score.

Just as they did in the fifth, Coach Monique White's squad continued to keep the contest close. With her second knock of the game, Kepple produces an early baserunner. A native of Winslow, Ariz. Williams tallied her second home run in two games. The two-run blast to left field made it a one-run contest once more. Towson did get out of the inning recording three consecutive outs silencing the Lady Pirates' bats.

Hampton during the final two innings had opportunities to erase the Tiger's advantage. In the sixth Kylee Quinn reached first on a hit by pitch. With a stolen base, the Lady Pirates had a baserunner in scoring position. Once again Towson Manufactured three straight outs to end the frame. Maduro took advantage of a fielding error by TU reaching second with only one out. Two straight flyouts ended the contest securing the victory for the Tigers.
